About the Program
Biotechnology studies the use of living organisms in the production of goods and services, or to improve existing processes. Applications include the diagnosis and treatment of disease, genetically modifying agricultural crops and production of vitamins, pharmaceuticals and other economically important products.
Biotechnology at York is a Specialized Honours stream within the Biology program. This stream prepares you for a career in this exciting, steadily growing field at the crossroads of biology, genetics, and biochemistry. You will learn the foundations of biotechnology as well as explore relevant social, legal, ethical and business practices in the field.
This program has been designed to provide a synthesis of carefully selected courses in molecular and cell biology, genetics and biochemistry with others in computer science, economics, business and ethics. All students are also required to complete an Honours Thesis course, which can include first-hand experience in independent research and current laboratory technique.
